Incident types and serious occurrences
See the type on each incident report, hear about serious occurrences, and mark them as reported to your licensing authority.
Incident types
Every new incident report has a Type. Staff choose it from a list when they record the incident. The everyday types come first:
- Scrape, bump or bruise
- Fall
- Head or face injury
- Bite
- Altercation between children
- Allergic reaction
- Illness at school (fever, vomiting)
- Damage to property
- Other
The serious types come after a divider:
- Injury or illness needing emergency medical care
- Missing or unsupervised child
- Pickup by someone not authorized
- Allegation of abuse or neglect
- Medication error
- Emergency at school (fire, lockdown, evacuation, closure)
- Death of a child
A teacher or assistant can report an incident only for children in rooms they teach. Reports filed before types existed have no type. See Logging incident reports for the form.
When a serious occurrence is reported
When someone chooses a serious type, the form says: "This is a serious occurrence. Your administrator will be notified. Most licensing authorities require a report within 24 hours."
Once it is recorded:
- Every administrator gets a notification, "Serious occurrence for Maya: Missing or unsupervised child". It opens the incident.
- The report shows a red Serious occurrence chip.
- Needs You on Today shows "Report Missing or unsupervised child for Maya", due 24 hours after the report was recorded. It opens the incident and stays until you mark it as reported.
The same happens when someone changes a report's type to a serious one.
Choose email and push for these in your notification settings under Serious Occurrences.
Mark it as reported
FutureNerds does not file anything with your licensing authority. Report the occurrence the way your authority asks, then:
- Open the incident from the notification or Needs You, or open the child and go to Incident Reports.
- Click Mark as reported.
The report now shows "Reported" with the date and time, and the Needs You item goes away. Only administrators can mark a report as reported, on the web, iPhone and Android.
What parents see
Parents see none of this: no serious occurrence chip, notice, notification or reported time. What you tell families about a serious occurrence is your school's decision.
