What practical life includes
| Strand | Examples |
|---|---|
| Care of self | Hand washing, buttoning and zipping, blowing your nose |
| Care of the environment | Table washing, sweeping, plant care |
| Grace and courtesy | Greeting, waiting, offering help |
| Control of movement | Carrying a tray, walking on the line |
Why it comes first
Practical life works are often the first a child chooses in a new classroom. They have a clear start and end, use real objects, and show the child right away whether it worked. The same movements prepare the hand for writing and the mind for longer work.
Practical life at each age level in FutureNerds
The AMS and AMI starter curricula in FutureNerds have a Practical Life area at every level. In Infant/Toddler it covers hand washing, self-feeding and dressing. In Primary it covers pouring, spooning, buttoning and zipping, table washing, food preparation, care of self, and grace and courtesy. In elementary it moves to time management, research skills and group work.
