What is a Montessori scope and sequence?
A Montessori scope and sequence lists every lesson in each curriculum area (the scope) and the order and ages in which they are given (the sequence). Schools plan lessons from it. In FutureNerds, the scope and sequence is your school's curriculum, which you can edit.
What it contains
A scope and sequence is grouped by age level and curriculum area. Inside each area, lessons run from the first presentation to the most abstract work.
| Area | Early lessons | Later lessons |
|---|---|---|
| Practical Life | Pouring, spooning | Food preparation, care of self |
| Sensorial | Pink Tower, Color Tablets | Geometric Solids |
| Language | Sound games, sandpaper letters | Movable Alphabet, reading phonetic words |
| Mathematics | Number Rods, Spindle Boxes | Golden Beads |
Training bodies and publishers each have their own. Montessori Compass, for example, is built on the Montessori Foundation Scope and Sequence.
How FutureNerds stores it
When a school is created, FutureNerds sets up its curriculum from the AMS or AMI framework, or a custom one. The curriculum has areas, such as Practical Life, Sensorial, Language, Mathematics and Cultural Studies, with competencies (lessons) inside each one, in display order. Every area belongs to one age level: Infant/Toddler, Primary, Lower Elementary, Upper Elementary or Adolescent. You can add, rename and remove areas and competencies at any time.
How to adapt the scope and sequence in FutureNerds
- Open the school's curriculum settings.
- Pick an age level to see its areas.
- Open an area to see its competencies in order.
- Add, rename or remove competencies to match your albums.
- Use the lessons in Plan Work Cycle and the Progress Grid.
Questions and answers
What is the difference between scope and sequence?
The scope is what is taught: every lesson in every area. The sequence is the order and the ages in which the lessons are usually given.
Does FutureNerds come with a scope and sequence?
Yes. FutureNerds sets up an AMS or AMI starter curriculum for each age level when the school is created, and you can edit every area and lesson.
Can a school use its own scope and sequence?
Yes. Choose Custom when you create the school and build your own areas and lessons, or start from AMS or AMI and edit them.
