What is a Montessori progress report?

A Montessori progress report describes a child's term in sentences and mastery levels instead of letter grades, area by area. In FutureNerds it is called a Montessori Assessment, and a guide can start it from a draft filled from the term's observations and progress records.

What a Montessori progress report covers

Overall summaryA few sentences on the child's term
Curriculum areasEach lesson's level (presented, practicing, mastered) and notes
Work habitsIndependence, concentration, care of the environment
Social-emotional developmentGrace and courtesy, conflict resolution, community
Physical developmentGross and fine motor skills
Teacher commentsAnything else the family should read

Why there are no grades

Montessori children work at their own pace on different lessons, so a grade compares them with nothing. The report says what each child has been presented, what they are practicing and what they have mastered, with examples a parent can picture.

How to write a progress report in FutureNerds

  1. Open the child's page and start a new Montessori Assessment.
  2. Under Term Information, enter the term name and set the start and end dates.
  3. Choose Generate draft from observations to fill the fields from the term's records.
  4. Read every field and edit it. Remove anything meant only for staff.
  5. Save Draft, then Publish when it is ready. Parents read it in the app.

Questions and answers

Do Montessori schools give grades?

Many Montessori schools do not, especially for children under 12. They write narrative progress reports with mastery levels instead.

How often are Montessori progress reports written?

Usually two or three times a year, often before parent conferences.

Can FutureNerds draft a progress report for me?

Yes. Generate draft from observations fills the assessment from the term's observations and progress records. The guide reads and edits it before publishing.
