What Storypark does well

Storypark connects educators and families around children's learning, with learning stories, child notes, developmental planning, daily routines, incident reports and attendance (home page). It is free for families, and the documentation and family engagement plan starts at $1.59 USD per child per month. It also lists enrolment, digital waitlists and tour bookings. In Australia, Storypark + Xap covers CCS, billing, payments and enrolment.

Its own pages also show these limits for a Montessori school:

The alternatives below start with dedicated Montessori record keepers and end with general childcare software.

The alternatives

1. Transparent Classroom

Made by Montessori educators, serving over 2,500 schools in 89 countries. It ships AMI and AMS lesson sets, and teachers log presentations, notes and photos linked to each child's progress. Its default scale is Introduced, Practiced, Mastered and Needs More. $2.50 per child per month, for children enrolled the previous month.

Suits a school that wants each presentation recorded against a Montessori lesson list, with photos shared to families.

2. Montessori Compass

Over 3,000 lessons from infant through age 12, with observations that can be private or shared with families. $2.00 per student per month for records, or $6.00 for the Growth Suite with billing and admissions. 30-day free trial. The interface is English only.

Suits a school that wants a ready-made list of over 3,000 Montessori lessons.

3. FutureNerds

Montessori records on an AMS or AMI curriculum with four mastery levels (not yet presented, presented, practicing, mastered) and a progress grid of children against lessons. Guides record observations, tag lessons on children in classroom photos, and choose which notes parents see. It also has attendance, toddler daily records, messages, invoicing through your own Stripe account, and admissions with a waitlist. The interface is in 14 languages. Free for your first 10 students, then $0.50 per child per month.

FutureNerds has no payroll and no SMS, and it does not import Storypark stories.

Suits a school that wants Montessori mastery tracking, billing and admissions in one app for less than Storypark's per-child price.

4. brightwheel

Childcare software with a Montessori scope and sequence aligned with AMS and AMI, payroll, staff scheduling and CACFP menus, and photo and video sharing in messages. Price by quote only.

Suits a larger center that wants family sharing and payroll in the same product.

How to choose a Storypark alternative

  1. Decide what matters more to your families: long learning stories, or a record of which lessons each child has been shown and mastered.
  2. If it is learning stories, stay with Storypark.
  3. If it is lesson records, try Transparent Classroom, Montessori Compass or FutureNerds with one classroom for a week.
  4. If you also want billing and admissions, compare FutureNerds with the Montessori Compass Growth Suite at your child count.
  5. Export each child from Storypark on a computer: open the child's profile, choose Edit, then Export portfolio. Download each link within 60 days.
  6. Keep the stories and photos as files, and import families into the new product from a CSV, XLSX or XLS file.

Questions and answers

What is the best Storypark alternative for a Montessori school?

For built-in Montessori lessons, Transparent Classroom and Montessori Compass are the closest alternatives. For Montessori records with billing and admissions at a lower price, FutureNerds fits better.

Is Storypark good for Montessori?

Storypark has no built-in Montessori scope and sequence on the pages we checked. Schools set up Montessori as their own learning set and tag stories to it.

Is there a cheaper alternative to Storypark?

Yes. FutureNerds is free for your first 10 students and $0.50 per child per month after that. At 25 children it costs $7.50 a month, compared with $39.75 on Storypark's starting price.

Can parents use FutureNerds for free?

Yes. Families do not pay for a FutureNerds account. They use the app on iPhone, Android or the web, and the school pays the per-child price.

Can I move my Storypark records to FutureNerds?

Yes. Export each child's portfolio from Storypark, which gives HTML stories, JPG photos and CSV files, then import families into FutureNerds from a CSV, XLSX or XLS file. Keep the stories as files.

Less paperwork. More presence.
