FutureNerds prints paper observation sheets for Montessori record keeping. Each sheet lists one child's lessons with bubbles for Presented, Practicing and Mastered. Guides mark the sheet by hand during the work cycle, then type the marks in or photograph the sheet, and review every mark before it is saved.

## What the sheet looks like

Each sheet covers one child on one date. FutureNerds builds it as a PDF to print on A4 paper in landscape.

- **Lessons.** Every active competency for the classroom's level, grouped in boxes by curriculum area, such as Practical Life, Sensorial, Language, Mathematics and Cultural Studies.
- **Three bubbles per lesson.** Presented, Practicing and Mastered, from left to right.
- **A notes area** on the right side of the page for anything a guide wants to write by hand.
- **A QR code** in the top right corner that names the sheet, and a black square in each corner of the page.

You choose blank or pre-filled when you print:

| Sheet | What is printed |
| --- | --- |
| Blank | Empty bubbles for every lesson |
| Pre-filled | The child's current level for each lesson as a gray bubble |

You can print a sheet for one child or for every child in the room. There is one sheet per child per day, and printing again for the same child and date replaces the earlier sheet.

## Marking the sheet

A guide fills in one bubble per lesson during the work cycle. A lesson with no mark is left as it is. On a pre-filled sheet, the gray bubble shows where the child stood when the sheet was printed, so the guide marks only what changed.

## Entering the marks

Paper marks become progress records only after someone enters them. There are two ways.

**Type them.** On the web, open the classroom's Observation Sheets page, choose "Enter from scan," and set each mark in the grid by hand.

**Photograph the sheet.** In the FutureNerds app for iPhone or Android, take a photo of the sheet or pick one from the photo library. On the web, choose "Enter from scan" and upload the image. FutureNerds reads the QR code to find the sheet, then reads the marked bubbles.

The photo reader is new. Every mark it reads is checked by a person before anything is saved:

- On the web, the marks appear in an editable grid, and saved scans wait on the Review tab. Correct any mark, then choose Commit.
- On iPhone and Android, the app lists each change it found, such as Pink Tower moving from Presented to Practicing, with a switch on each row. Turn off any row that is wrong, then save.

A mark that matches the child's current level is not listed as a change. Nothing is written to the child's record until the guide commits the marks.

## What happens after you save

Each saved mark becomes a mastery record for that lesson, dated with the date on the sheet. It shows on the classroom's Progress Grid and in the child's Learning tab, next to marks entered from lesson plans and observations. See [observations and progress](/product/observations).

Photos of sheets are stored privately for the school's staff. FutureNerds keeps each photo for 90 days, then deletes it.

Administrators, teachers and assistants can print sheets and enter marks.

## How to use observation sheets in FutureNerds

1. Open the classroom and choose Observation Sheets.
2. Pick one child or all children, a date, and blank or pre-filled.
3. Print the PDF on A4 paper in landscape.
4. During the work cycle, fill in one bubble per lesson: Presented, Practicing or Mastered.
5. Type the marks into the grid on the web, or photograph the sheet in the iPhone or Android app, or upload a photo with "Enter from scan" on the web.
6. Check every mark on the Review tab, or in the review list on your phone, and fix any that are wrong.
7. Commit the marks. They are added to each child's progress.
