A Montessori work cycle is a long, uninterrupted block of time, usually about three hours in a primary classroom, in which each child chooses work, repeats it and puts it away. In FutureNerds, guides plan each day's morning and afternoon work periods and record lessons from the plan.

## What happens during a work cycle

Children choose work from the shelves, take it to a table or mat, work with it as long as they want, and return it. The guide gives short lessons to one child or a small group and observes the rest of the room.

Adults avoid breaking the time into fixed rotations. A child who is deep in a piece of work is left to finish it, because concentration is the point of the cycle.

## How long it lasts

| Program | Typical length |
| --- | --- |
| Toddler | Shorter blocks, often an hour or more |
| Primary (3 to 6) | About three hours in the morning |
| Elementary (6 to 12) | About three hours, often with an afternoon block too |

Many schools also have a shorter afternoon work period after lunch and rest.

## How FutureNerds records the work cycle

Each plan in FutureNerds is for one classroom and one date, with a **Morning Work Period** and an **Afternoon Work Period**. Guides add lessons from the school's lesson library, assign children, and tap a child's pill to record presented, practicing or mastered. See [lesson planning](/product/lesson-planning).

## How to plan a work cycle in FutureNerds

## Questions and answers

### How long is a Montessori work cycle?

In a primary classroom it is usually about three hours, most often in the morning. Toddler rooms use shorter blocks, and many schools add an afternoon work period.

### Why should the work cycle not be interrupted?

Children need time to choose work, settle into it and repeat it. Breaking the time into short slots ends that concentration before it starts.

### Can I plan the work cycle in FutureNerds?

Yes. FutureNerds plans have a Morning Work Period and an Afternoon Work Period for each classroom and date, with lessons from your AMS, AMI or custom curriculum.
